PREP CLINICS:
When:
Sunday, December 6, 2009: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

This clinic is open to all high school and college cheerleaders interested in trying out for a collegiate cheerleading squad or getting ready for competition. It is designed to help high school students better prepare themselves for their college cheerleading tryout or just get some few extra pointers. Athletes that attend this clinic are not obligated to Texas State in any way. Everyone is encouraged to come learn, have fun, and to get a step ahead for your collegiate tryout.
  • $60 per person registration fee includes 4 hours with Texas State Cheer Squad members
  • The clinic will be held in Jowers Gym 102 on the Texas State University campus using a 2 ¼ inch foam floor.
  • Staffed by Texas State Cheer Squad and coaches
  • Attendance limit for this clinic is set at 75 cheerleaders max.
  • Register by emailing Chris Hendon at ch66@txstate.edu
  • Payment can be made at the time of the clinic.
  • Stunting, tumbling, pyramids, basket toss instruction, discussion about college cheerleading, how to conduct yourself at a tryout interview, and question and answers with the coaches.
  • Everyone must sign a waiver with parent’s consent.

OPEN WORKOUTS :

Open workouts are open events geared towards incoming recruits to give them a feel for what our program is like. You will be able to tumble and stunt with current and prospective members alike. Participants will not need to bring a partner for this workout and do not have to pay to attend. Open workouts are open for all participants showing proof of medical insurance and completing a waiver of liability form. Friends and family are also welcome to watch the workouts.

Candidates do not need to register and are welcome to attend any open workouts. Each workout is an OPEN process and NO INVITATIONS ARE REQUIRED. We ask that you e-mail one of the cheer coaches to notify them if you plan on attending. Please put “Open Workouts" in the subject line letting us know which date you would like to attend. Open workouts will be taken on a first come basis. Once any open workout is full, we will indicate so online and will notify any persons who have registered after the session filled.

TRYOUTS:

General Information

Cheer Try-outs are a two-day long process occurring in April and consists of three phases; at each phase cuts may be made. Try-outs will be held in Jowers Gym 102 on the campus of Texas State University. A list will be posted following the last day of try-outs indicating who made the squad.

Mascot Try-outs are a one-day process occuring in April consisting of two phases; at each phase cuts may be made. Try-outs will be held in Jowers Gym 102 on the campus of Texas State University. A list will be posted following the last day of try-outs indicating who made the squad.

Try-Outs are open to all candidates!

If Selected

• You must be in good academic standing, which means that your cumulative GPA must be a 2.0 or higher. You can not be on academic or disciplinary probation.

• All persons must live in San Marcos (Hays/Comal County) area during the regular school year.

• If selected, you understand that you are required to be covered by personal injury medical insurance throughout the period that you are a spirit program member at Texas State University.

• If selected, you must attend all scheduled practices, classes, performances, summer camps, and other designated functions/duties assigned by the Spirit Program, coach or director.

• If selected, you agree to follow all safety guidelines deemed necessary by the Spirit Program, coach or director.

  • If selected, you will be required to tryout/be a member of the national competition team and be an active member for any activities in which the program participates.

The coach and/or advisor has the authority to make the final decisions in the try-out process. The general try-out process is subject to change.
Application File

All candidates trying out must have a completed application packet. This file must include the following:

• Proof of enrollment to Texas State University. (if entering Texas State this can be an acceptance letter)

• Copy of insurance card

• Completed Recruit Questionnaire

• $25 application fee (checks payable to Texas State)

• College/High School Transcript (can be unofficial)

• Self Photo (will not be returned)

Please have all paperwork turned into the Spirit Program Office at least two (2) days prior to try-outs.

Attire (NEW INFORMATION)
Before entering the gym for tryouts please make sure that you complete the following attire checklist. You should be presentable in every way. Once you entire the gym judging officially begins. DO NOT BE LATE!!!

Attire for women:
- Sports bra
- Spandex or fitted shorts
- White hair bow
- Make-up
- No jewelry

Attire for men:
- General work out clothing (t-shirt and shorts)
- Shoes must be worn (no black-soled shoes)
- No jewelry

Attire for mascots:
- General work out clothing (t-shirt and shorts)
- Shoes must be worn (no black-soled shoes)
- No jewelry

Do not wear:
- Any body piercings
- Other schools paraphernalia

Additional Notes

Tryouts are closed to parents and guests. Only persons trying out are allowed in the gym after the initial meeting.

No walk-ons will be accepted later in the year. All persons must go through tryouts.


Cheer Try-Out Phase Description
Friday - Phase I:
Candidates will demonstrate their standing and running tumbling abilities in an informal process. The judges/staff will determine which candidates will proceed to the next phase. If needed, a brief "stunt around" time will be used to finalize the first cut.
Friday - Phase II:
Candidates will be asked to stunt “around" with several potential squad members. A cut may be made to determine which candidates will proceed. Candidates will also be taught try-out material and given the opportunity to practice more advanced stunting skills while selecting a partner for the remaining try-out process.
Saturday - Phase III:
Candidates will perform the cheer, fight song, and partner stunts in a formal try-out process for the judges/staff. A final cut list will be posted indicating what candidates have made the team.
Mascot Try-Out Phase Description
Friday - Phase I:
Candidates will demonstrate their ability to be funny, improv and move around affectively in the suit. Furthermore you must show your ability to quickly pick up on charateristics of Boko.
Friday - Phase II:
Candidates will demonstrate and original skit routine (1 to 2 minutes) showing your ability to be funny, interactive, engaging while also communicating affectively through motions.

Video Tryout Process
The video try-out process is for all candidates unable to attend our regular try-outs held on campus. However, attendance to try-outs is strongly recommended.
NOTE: No official position will be offered to a video try-out candidate before he / she has attended a scheduled practice. You may call the Spirit Program at 512-749-5406 to schedule your visit.
Please adhere to the following guidelines when submitting a video:

A completed video, recruit questionnaire, proof of admission, high school/college transcript and $25 application fee must be received by the Spirit Program Office by the Thursday prior to the first day of try-outs. (VHS or DVD formats accepted.)

All video submissions must include these skills in the following order:
Material:
• One chant incorporating tumbling (choreographed by candidate)
• One cheer incorporating tumbling (choreographed by candidate)
 

Tumbling:
• 4 Standing Back Tucks one 8 count between
• Standing tumbling skills (ex. back handspring back tuck, Toe Back)
• Optional standing tumbling skills
• One running tumbling pass
• Optional running tumbling pass

Stunting:
• All stunts below may be performed from the hands level, as a toss, a full-up, or a rewind:
• Liberty
• Stretch full- down or double down
• Cupie
• Optional stunt to stunt sequence

Note: Each section of the material (stunting, tumbling, material, and interview) must be performed in succession with the video running. There may be a break between sections however (ex: break between material and tumbling). Please do not edit out each mistake you may make while demonstrating the required skills per section.

Notification of Selection for Video Candidates
All candidates offered a non-scholarship position will be posted on the Texas State Spirit Program home page following completion of the try-out process. If any video candidate has not attended a workout in person, he or she may be contacted to set-up an in-person workout so that a final decision can be made.
